"The Rains Came Down and the Floods Came Up . . ."

The cute little primary song became a reality for us last Saturday. Torrential Rains hit Kanab. At 4:00 in the morning, Rob and I woke up to the loudest thunder and brightest lightening I've ever seen. We thought it was quite a storm until Rob took a peek out the window at the front of our house - We then realized it was a severe storm. Outside our house was a giant whirl pool. I tried to get some pictures but we don't have a great camera.

Our "house on the rock stood still", but apparently our car is not built on or like a rock because as we were watching the storm our car suddenly took flight. It floated up one road way, then back, circled a few times in the whirl pool and headed up the other road almost hitting two other cars on the way. You can't see it very well but our car is behind the white car in the middle of the road in the picture below.

It was a crazy night but, the following day was even more so. I knew floods were destructive but until you see the after math it's hard to relate.

Then the clean up began

Abigail didn't mind the clean up - in fact she quite enjoyed it

We spent all day cleaning up. Many of our neighbor's homes got a foot of water and mud. We helped gut their apartments. Heavy equipment had to bulldoze all the mud, rocks, and tree branches out of the way in order to be able to drive, and many people worked on sandbags because the forecast predicted another thunder storm is coming. It was fun to see the whole community come together to help. I only saw the destruction at our complex but apparently many homes, business, and even the elementary school were flooded. So clean up continues. . .

After a whole day of hard work, Rob and I made the most of what we found ourselves in . . . like they say, 'when given lots of mud make mud pies.'

So that was our exciting day in Kanab, Below is a before and after shot so for those of you who haven't come to visit us yet (guilt trip) you can see what it was like originally.

  4. Wow! It is hard to imagine. I'm so sorry for those who had to gut their apartments and so glad that you aren't one of them. Help them a lot so I don't feel guilty about being glad. You are holding Abbie in the first mud picture and then I couldn't see her in the next ones. I was afraid you had lost her in the mud. Good thing you have a later photo of a neighbor holding her or I might be very concerned. I would come help if I could. Dad wants to know if you went to church of Sunday or work on Monday.
